? SAVE AS problem with DPlotJr

Post by GSAC3 »

Dave:

I am not sure if you are aware of the following problem with the latest beta version of DplotJr.

When I click on the “SAVE AS” option to save a GRF file, the radio buttons displayed in “FILE FORMAT” window that pops-up are overwritten by three button controls.

Don,
Fixed it, thanks for pointing out the problem.

Still no good answer on your Windows Me/dplotvu.exe problem, and your ini file had no effect. I'm waiting on a vacationing teenager to return home with her Windows Me system - until then I'm clueless.

Standing by.

BTW, I uninstalled DPLOTVU and re-installed it again -- but no luck.

I will try installing it on my notebook (Windows-98 first edition) and see what happens there.

Bah. This is approaching hair-pulling status. Stupid question time:
1) What folder is dplotvu.exe installed in?
2) How do you launch it?
3) How do you exit?

Having same problem with DPLOT beta

Post by GSAC3 »

Dave:

Sorry to be such a pain--

On my DELL DIMENSION 8100 (under Windows-ME):

1. DPLOTVU is located in C:\DPLOT VIEWER directory.
2. I launched it by clicking on the DPLOTVU icon in the same directory
(and also by clicking on the DPLOT VIEWER icon on the desktop as well
as clicking on any GRF file.)
3. In every case it doesn't matter whether I "X" out the DPLOTVU window
or click on the "EXIT" option under "FILES". All produce the same result
on closing.

I just downloaded DPLOT (beta), installed it, launched it, and then exited --
guess what happened -- same thing as with DPLOTVU.

This is a real hair-puller (and I don't have that much left to pull).

FOR THE RECORD

BTW, I neglected to mention that the closing errors problem DOES NOT happen when closing DPLOTJR!

Don,
You're certainly not being a pain, I appreciate your patience. It has to be something off-the-wall or I'd be flooded with irate e-mails by now. On the off chance that there's something your system doesn't like about compressing the exe's - maybe DoubleSpace/DriveSpace or a virus detection that doesn't like the compression - please try (Edit: removed file. Compression wasn't the problem, which was later fixed). You'll notice that (if you install this correctly), dplotvu.exe is 1890Kb instead of ~406Kb. I started using ASPack to compress the executables about the time you started having a problem. That's certainly not definitive, but is all I can think of right now.

EUREKA!!!

Post by GSAC3 »

Dave:

ASPack seems to be causing the problem.

The NON-ASPacked version of DPLOTVIEWER.EXE works fine with NO CLOSING ERROR MESSAGES.

I suspected that this may be the problem earlier so I ASPacked the 1.7.4 version of DPLOTVU.EXE (from 1.38mb to 325kb) and tried it out. But I did not get any closing errors with the compacted version; so I ruled it out as possibly causing the problem.

Thanks for the help.

Don,
Thanks for the reply. I'm still not satisfied that this is the answer, but w/o more data points I'm spinning in circles. So for now at least I'll get rid of the compression. Please let me know if you run into similar problems with version 1.9.6.1 (not uploaded yet, but will be real soon now).

Dave:

I just ASPacted the non-ASPacted version of DPLOTVU.EXE (beta version) and low-and-behold the 405kb packed version ALSO WORKS FINE with NO CLOSING ERRORS???

Maybe it is something else.

I'll try your new version next and let you know.

The difference might be due to different versions of ASPack, or... or... I don't know. In any case the new uncompressed versions are now up. I'm headed to the liquor store in anticipation of your next mail :D

RE: That trip to the liquor store ...

Post by GSAC3 »

Dave:

DPLOTVU (1.9.6.1) works fine; BUT (now for the bad news)
DPLOT (1.9.6.1) still gives the same exit error messages.

I ASPacked the new DPLOTVU with version 2.12 of ASPack, and the resulting packed version of DPLOTVU (1.9.6.1) works fine as well.

Guess you had better make that trip to the liquor store anyway.

Don,
For now I'll have to throw up and hands and say "I dunno". I've tested all versions on 5 systems running 3 different Windows versions and not had that problem. But more importantly, the version of dplotvu.exe you started having this problem with has been available for close to a month and I've not had a single similar complaint. So I think this has to be something peculiar about your two systems - cranky antivirus software, disk compression software, or... I dunno.

If you would, please, check to see if you have drwtsn32.exe in your system32 folder. If so run it before running and shutting down DPlot, then send me the log file if there is one.

Don,
Thanks for the log file. I figured that would be a wild goose chase, but I do believe it pointed to the problem. I'm still not entirely sure why the offending line more or less consistently crashed on your systems and worked on mine (and apparently most everyone else's). But in any case the problem is solved unless I'm badly mistaken.

Thanks for all of your input and your patience with this.
